3 Steps for Keeping New Year’s Resolutions

Tips to Achieve Your Goals in 2016

Oh my gosh, it’s 2016! Can you believe it? You know what that means…. time for New Year’s Resolutions again! Now, before you go getting all hard on yourself for not keeping last year’s resolutions, know that it’s not entirely your fault they didn’t stick! Yep, I said it! Here are my three simple steps to keeping your resolutions!

3 Steps for Keeping New Year’s Resolutions

Step One: Think of making resolutions in a positive way!

First of all, think of the word “resolutions.” It sounds awful— as if you were bad all year, and now you’re being punished. Thinking of resolutions this way only makes us want to rebel against them. Let’s switch that train of thought a bit! Resolutions are opportunities not only to be healthier, but HAPPIER. We wouldn’t set goals if we didn’t think they’d make us happier, right?

3 Steps for Keeping New Year’s Resolutions

Step Two: Write down your goals.

Go ahead and sit down on a piece of paper and pen (or your phone), and give yourself plenty of time. Write down your list of goals for 2016, be as specific as possible, write how you’re going to achieve it, and give yourself a time constraint! For example, rather than say, “I should lose weight,” write, “I want to lose 15 pounds in 10 weeks by exercising every morning at 5:00 a.m., drinking a gallon of water a day, and keeping my calories at X per day.” See how making your goals more specific helps you ENVISION achieving them?

Step Three: Next to each goal, write WHY you want to achieve it.

Simply wanting to attain a goal, or feeling like you should, won’t necessarily DRIVE you to take action or exercise your willpower. However, when you are emotionally attached to a goal, you are more likely to see it through, and not give in when the journey gets challenging! Ask yourself why you want to achieve each specific goal. For example, you might be motivated by an upcoming event, your parents or maybe a love interest. Maybe you’re motivated to make a difference, and inspire others by achieving your goals. Whichever reason compels you most, write that down! You’ll know if your reason is spot on when a moment of temptation comes along. If you give in, you might want to re-think WHY you want to achieve that goal. If you can turn down the sweets, greasy food, alcohol, AND stay on your workout regimen, chances are you have a compelling vision for sticking to that goal!
