There are so many gimmicks and diets out there promising to help you lose weight quickly. But what actually works? On page 90 (“Lose 10 Pounds in 10 Days!”), we’ve got an exclusive interview with celebrity trainer and best-selling author Jackie Warner, who discusses her brand-new book, 10 Pounds in 10 Days. This is no ordinary diet book; Jackie provides day-by-day plans for eating and training so that you can lose 10, 20, 30 pounds or more— you can tailor the plan to suit whatever your fitness goals may be. It’s not about cleansing or starving the body; it’s about eating nutrient-dense foods, altering your workouts from one day to the next, and changing your lifestyle, says Jackie. “You will absolutely lose weight and change your body, change your genetic shape if you simply just do what I tell you to do. It is not hard at all,” she says.
Every girl wants a tight butt and flat abs, but actually achieving that winning combo is another story. Well, this month you’re in luck, because our cover girl Juliana Daniell shares her blueprint for a sexy butt and abs in “Under Construction” on page 62. With Juliana’s tips and workouts, you’ll know exactly what you need to get in shape just like her. She says her award-winning glutes were achieved with lunges, step-ups, leg presses and squats. “Swimming, gymnastics and genetics I’m sure play a part in my rear, but today it’s because of the exercises I do!” claims Juliana.
It’s a question many athletes and active women ask: what’s the best way to burn fat while maintaining lean body mass? In “New Study: Healthiest Weight Loss” Marie Spano, MS, RD, CSCS, CSSD, discusses protein intake versus traditional calorie counting for building and maintaining lean body mass while burning fat. In addition to helping add lean body mass during weight gain, a higher protein diet will help spare muscle losses during weight loss and help prevent weight regain after weight loss. Though taking in fewer total calories than you burn may be one key to weight loss, you can alter the type of weight you are losing, in favor of fat, by focusing on protein. You can flip to page 88 to read more about this cutting-edge research.
MMA fighting is not all about masculinity anymore. In “Barbie Breaks Arms” on page 78, MMA Champion and Olympian Ronda Rousey shows that girls with long blonde hair and pretty faces can be tough, too. In the profile, Ronda shares how she trains, what supplements she takes, how she prepares for a fight both emotionally and physically, and what her typical diet is like. Ronda’s advice can be applied anywhere, including your own fitness program. “It’s easy to want to be the best in the world for one day, even for a week… but to sustain that drive is extremely difficult. All it takes is the ability to make yourself get up and go train, even when you have every reason and excuse in the world not to.”
